TOXICODENDRON! Does that word strike fear in your heart? Probably not, but maybe it should! The word toxicodendron comes from two Greek words that literally translate to “poison tree” in English. Maybe you already guessed it – we’re talking about poison ivy, oak, or sumac.

These plants contain an oil that can irritate your skin and cause painful, itchy blisters for those who are allergic to it. Even worse, if they’re burned, the smoke could get into your lungs or eyes, causing serious issues that may require hospitalization. Especially if you’re allergic, it’s good to wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and/or pants when you’re working in the yard. However, if you become familiar with what these plants look like, it may be possible to avoid them entirely. Additionally, you could wash your clothes immediately when you go back inside, and take a hot (not cold, since cold water can trap the oils in your skin!) shower to flush out any exposure you may have had to the oil from these plants.
